Aldemir Icecream

Photo: Aldemir Eis

A seductive waffle fragrance in the air and crowds who patiently wait in line –- who perceives that, has arrived at the cult ice cream shop Aldemir Eis in Kreuzberg. For here the waffles are still homemade, and as eatable sundaes lush filled with ice cream, whipped cream and loads of fresh fruits. The ladys behind the bar are extremly nice fast and with their round hats dressed like traditional ice sellers in Italy, who portion the iceballs and toppings generously. Especially popular Aldemir ice creams are cream cheese with sesame and honey, roasted almonds or chocolate and orange. Some varieties are also prepared with lactose free soy milk, in total there are 40 flavors – they change about every week and only a small part is almost always available. Yesterday we started the ice season with grandmas apple pie, rhubarb yogurt and the new fig gorgonzola creation. Heavenly.

What is the scent of Berlin? At least Stefanie Hanssens creation Berlin, newly designed for the famous warehouse KaDeWe, smells vibrant and spicy and combines bergamot with lemon, water lilies, cedar wood and cardamon. More impressions of Berlin like the fresh floral Linde Berlin, the energetically tangy Berlin Summer to the utterly extravagant Pure Violet, a scent that captivated Marlene Dietrich almost 100 years ago, you can find at Frau Tonis Parfüm close to Checkpoint Charly. All perfumes are produced locally in Berlin and show cased in clear glass pharmacy bottles in a pure black and white store to guarantee that nothing will distract you from what is really important, the fragrance itself. The store also runs evening classes where you can learn the art of composing your individual perfume while supping and munching champagne and pralines.

After his start in a tiny shop on Münzstrasse, Andreas Murkudis opened his huge concept store in July 2011 on Potsdamer Strasse in Berlin Tiergarten. Here, in the former printing house of Tagesspiegel, he developed with the architects Gonzalez Haase AAS, more a gallery than a shop to present his personal pick on accessoires, art, books, cosmetics, design objects, glasses, interior, jewelery, liquors, luggage, furniture, perfume, rugs and fashion – not only by his brother Kostas Mukudis. The reduced interiour design, the almost quadratic room with its hight of seven meters as well as 1,000 sqaremeters Hagensieker planks create an impressive temple, where design lovers can end their pilgrimage. Next to international well known brands you will find small manufactures from all over the world, that are not known to a broader audience yet. Some of our favourites are Aesop, Dries van Noten, Christian Haas, e15, Escentric Molecules, Isaac Reina, Maison Martin Margiela, Neri FirenzeSaskia Diez, Stephanie SchneiderClemens Tissi or When Objects Work. Andreas Murkudis is a king of taste and garantuees with his name for materials, quality and tradition. Always worth a visit, lovers of high-end aesthetic objects can also stroll online through the store’s thoughtful selection.

Claudia Skoda came to fashion in the mid 70ties when she began knitting avant-garde pieces for friends. Together they rented and renovated a factory floor in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Fabrikneu, as the 650m² loft was called, was an open house, where all kind of artist, filmmakers and musicians lived and worked together. One of them was the celebrated artist Martin Kippenberger, who came to Berlin in 1976. He installed the floor of the catwalk, made of about 1,000 photos taken in the commune, on which the Skoda fashion show was held in 1977. This was the start of the legendary Skoda shows, she sets in scene with friends. Among them were David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who were often visiting Fabrikneu as well. In 1981, she opened her first store in New York until she returned to her hometown in 1987. The distinctive style of her body-hugging, chic knitted dresses made of fine, gauzy yarn made her one of the most influential and best known knitting designers the world. And everything is still handmade and modern, this is why we and Hollywood stars like Cate Blanchett, Milla Jovovich and Ridley Scott shop at Skoda’s.

Vom Einfachen das Gute

Around Ackerhalle, where most Berliners who live close to Rosenthaler Platz buy their food, a lot of little shops pop up, like this one, which sells delicious bread, cheese, sausages, meat and more. Vom Einfachen das Gute was opened by Manuela Rehn und Jörg Reuter in July 2013, a project from their hearts that the two entrepreneurs wanted to realize for many years. A shop where you find only things  that taste good and are produced sustainably under good conditions. Like the black hoof jamón from Iberian black acorn-fed pigs that live in huge areas under the Spanish sun. They also have many products from regional farmers.  We love having a Brotzeit at the huge wooden table in the back of the store where you can relax perfectly from Saturday shopping.

RAU BERLIN

Flyer: RAU Berlin

Our designer friend Martina Rau founded her label RAU BERLIN in 2004 with the experiences made through her work at Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.  She designs and produces exquisite clothes for urban women under the maxim Clarity and being different regarding the design. Rau’s fashion is known for extraordinary cuts and the mixture of several materials in one garment – her creations are elegant, simple and very wearable. RAU BERLIN presents fashion for a confident woman, who isn’t interested to be upstaged by her clothes, but who calls attention to quality and special details. While Rau mostly keeps her creations monochrome, for her collections she likes picking one key colour standing out from the rest. Check out our all time favorite – the cool and sexy leather pants, that more and more Berlin women wear like a second skin. Also you can find her collection at the new concept mall Bikin Berlin. Happy 10th anniversary.
